CONFERENCE CREATES HYSTERIA OVER NON-EXISTENT THREAT OF THEOCRACY

Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation (JAACD) says an April 29-30 conference ("Examining The Real Agenda of The Religious Far Right"), taking place at the City University of New York, is business as usual for the fear-mongering left.

"There they go again," said JAACD President Don Feder, "raving and ranting about the religious right and the supposed threat of theocracy in America. When liberals go after Christian conservatives, paranoia mixes with political opportunism."

"A brief survey of the titles of presentations at the conference gives you a sense of the level of hysteria," Feder declared. They include: "Fundamentalism: The Fear and the Rage," "The Real Hidden Religious Agenda: The Theocratic States of America," "Is Unholy Theocracy Here?" and "On The Psychology and Theocracy of George W. Bush: Reflections in a Culture of Fear."

Said Feder: "The absurdity of this charge is demonstrated by the diversity of the social-values movement called the religious right. Its leaders include Dr. James Dobson, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, usually associated with evangelism. But also found among its champions are Alan Keyes, Bill Bennett and Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life (Catholics all) and Rabbi Daniel Lapin, Dennis Prager and Michael Medved (Orthodox Jews)."

"How could these individuals ever agree on doctrine?" Feder asked. "Would their 'theocratic state' be governed by Catholic dogma, the positions of the Southern Baptist Convention or Torah Judaism?"

"In fact," Feder explained, "the agenda of what the organizers of this hate-fest call 'the Religious far Right,' is a return to the principles of the Founding Fathers - Judeo-Christian morality, opposition to the militant homosexual agenda and allowance for modest public expressions of faith."

Feder declared: "If this program is "the Religious Far Right,' than the majority of Americans - who take the same positions - are part of that movement."

Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation was organized to defend Christians against the type of smears being employed by conference organizers. JAACD was launched at a Washington, D.C. press conference last week. Its board of directors includes columnists, academics, scholars, rabbis and authors.
