For Immediate Release For More Information, Contact: Bryan Rudnick, Communications Director at 561-499-3201 JEWISH GROUP OPPOSES EFFORTS TO BAN PRAYER IN JESUS’ NAME Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation opposes efforts of the Anti-Defamation League to ban prayers in Jesus name during meetings of the village council in Wellington, Florida. "The ADL should change its name to the Anti-Christian League," said JAACD President Don Feder. Wellington, a village near Palm Beach, allows Christian clergy to pray in Jesus name. Florida ADL Regional Director Andrew L. Rosenkranz claims the policy violates a 1983 Supreme Court decision by advancing "a particular religious belief." Feder countered, "The Supreme Court has never ruled that Christian prayers before the opening of legislative sessions are unconstitutional, as long as other clergy have an opportunity to offer prayers according to their traditions." Rosenkranz’s fall-back position is inclusiveness - "You try to make as many people feel included as possible, so that nobody feels that they’re being left out of any particular prayer." "What nonsense," Feder replied. "By definition, atheists and agnostics are excluded from any prayer. If a rabbi says the Shema ("the Lord our God, the Lord is One") , do Christians feel excluded? If so, they don’t whine about it - or threaten legal action - like the ADL." "In America we respect other religious traditions. Those who are secure in their own beliefs don’t demand that they always be included in public prayer. This country is overwhelmingly Christian. Christians should be free to pray publicly according to their conscience," Feder observed. Feder concluded, "The ADL, which appears to be on a search and destroy mission to eliminate all public manifestations of Christianity in a nation founded by Christians, and which remains almost 90% Christian, should find something more productive to do with its time." Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation is a national organization which opposes attacks on Christianity and Christians by militant secularists in the news media and Hollywood, as well as activist judges and organizations like the ADL and ACLU. In so doing, it defends America’s Judeo-Christian heritage. For more information on our activities, visit our website - www.jews4fairness.org. |
