  • Born in Vienna, Austria
  • Married the former Maxine Rudin of Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Four children; 15 grandchildren; 12 of whom live in Jerusalem
  • Five members of immediate family are Reform rabbis; two are Orthodox rabbis in Israel, including a son in Jerusalem; two relatives are Conservative rabbis in Israel

  • University of Vienna (1927-38)
  • Last Austrian to be enrolled for rabbinic studies at the Jewish Theological Institute of Vienna. Following the Nazi invasion of Austria in 1938, continued studies in the United States
  • B.A. University of Cincinnati (1940)
  • M.H.L. Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute Of Religion, Cincinnati. Rabbinic Ordination (1945)

Communal-Interfaith Activities:

Led the delegation of the Central Conference of American Rabbis to Toledo, Spain for the reconciliation meeting with Cardinal Martin in observance of the 500th Anniversary of the Expulsion of Jews from Spain (March 1992)

Developed religious dialogue with Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, DC and with Evangelical Christian leaders

Initiated a Muslin-Jewish dialogue with Imam Wallace D. Muhammad of the World Community of Islam in the West (1978)

Preached at the White House in 1978

Represented the Jewish Faith at the Washington National Cathedral Memorial Service following Sept. 11, 2001

Conducted adult study tours to Oxford University in 1992 and 1996, to Mt. Sinai and Jerusalem in 2000, to Cambridge University in 2002 and to Spain "In the Footsteps of Maimonides" in 2003, with lectures and study sessions on the life and work of Maimonides.
